My Cousin Julia
My cousin Julia would say she’s primarily about how energies affect people. She would say she’s an intuitive who does energy readings. She sort of has a language of energy that’s based on different colors. When she looks at somebody, she looks at them as if they’re pure energy. She’ll close her eyes, because she’s not really looking at your physical body. And in her mind, it’s like she just knows. You’ve probably heard, there’s clairvoyance, which is seeing. There’s also clairaudience, which is hearing, and there’s claircognizance, which is knowing—she thinks she’s more like that.
She’ll be like, Oh, that’s purple. There’s a lot of purple here. And to her that means the person’s trying to be more autonomous, or trying to be more empowered in some situation in their life. But it’s not like she even sees a color. Mostly what’s in there is black, mostly nothingness. It’s more just the word purple. And to her that means things.
Some of it would make sense to anybody. Like if she sees a lot of red, she’s going to think you’re agitated about something. Because red feels like fire, more aggressive. If she sees green, she’s going to think this person’s growing and maybe they’re trying to do some nurturing. Because green seems like spring, or plants. So in some ways the color language she has is very relatable. But she does think it’s a language she has embellished, just based on her own experience. She doesn’t always tell a client what color she sees, though. Because she doesn’t want them to get too distracted by intellectualizing it. So she might not say she sees pink. She might just say, You look like you’re in a playful, creative period.

And she doesn’t always say she’s psychic. The word psychic just freaks people out. It has so much energy on it. She thinks words can get energy in them. Like the word love has this energy to it. And the word rage also has energy. But honestly she doesn’t even really talk about it, at this point in her life. Because she doesn’t do this professionally anymore, just friends and family. She has one person who calls her, one person left. And she probably could try to get going again, you know, but right now it just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel fun. And that’s her little sign—like, Nope, not now.
She thinks psychic stuff happens so much, we don’t even notice some of it. It could be something little, like she’s thinking about a song and all of a sudden it comes on the radio. Or she’s thinking about someone and then they send an email. That stuff’s happening all the time. She’ll be driving down the road and just knowing shit about someone in the car next to her. Being like, God, that person’s so angry. She feels like you would know it too, just by the way they were driving. But for her, she’s been doing that all day. Because she’s always in it. Her foot’s always in the pool—one foot in that pool of awareness.
It’s like listening to a radio show or something. There’s a constant stream. It’s always right there. And if she’s doing a reading, very consciously connecting, it’s super loud and she’s really focused on the song she’s listening to. And she’s really paying attention to the lyrics, and how the drummer’s doing their part. Other times it’s like the background noise. She’s not really paying attention, but it’s still on. The noise is still there. And she doesn’t think she can turn it off. Turning it off, for her, would be getting blackout drunk. But she doesn’t feel like it’s a problem. She’s comfortable with it.
